Ahead of his first official visit to India next week, Boris Johnson, the Tory mayor of London, on Friday called for immigration curbs on Indian students and workers to be relaxed describing some of the stringent visa rules as “counter-productive’’.
His views were echoed by John Cridland, director–general of the Confederation of Business Industry whose members are accompanying Mr. Johnson on his visit. He said that Britain’s multi-billion pound higher education market was suffering as the country was no longer seen as a welcoming destination.
More students going to UK to study: British Council
KOLKATA, NOVEMBER 26:
The global economic slowdown is unlikely to deter an Indian student from aspiring to study abroad. According to Sujata Sen, Director, East India, British Council, more Indian students are going to the UK for higher studies.
Close to 30,000 Indian students applied for higher education in the UK in 2011. Though the figures for 2012 have yet to be collated, trends indicate that the numbers would either remain steady or even post a marginal growth this year, she said.
