IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is designed to assess the language ability of candidates wishing to study or work where English is the language of communication.

IELTS opens doors to international education, employment and professional recognition for hundreds of thousands of candidates each year.


IELTS has been developed by the British Council in partnership with IELTS Australia and Cambridge ESOL on the strength of forty years of research. IELTS tests are guaranteed to show your true ability to communicate in English across all four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking. IELTS test will be reported in two ways: there will be a Band Score from 1 to 9 for each of the modules and an Overall Band Score from 1 to 9, which is the average of yours scores in the four modules. The result is valid for 2 years.


Types of IELTS: There are two types of IELTS test


-General Training

The General Training module is usually taken by people who want to immigrate.



Is taken by people who want to take further or higher education courses at colleges or universities in a country where English is spoken as a first language.


Duration: The test is for 2 hours & 45 minutes excluding the Speaking module. The Speaking module is for 15 minutes; hence the total duration is for 3 hours.


IELTS Test Format 


General Training:

-Listening (40 questions) – 30 minutes

-Reading (40 questions) – 60 minutes

-Writing (2 essays) – 60 minutes

-Speaking – 10 to 15 minutes.

1st essay (150 words) 20 minutes

2nd essay (250 words) 40 minutes

-Band 9: Expert User

-Band 8: Very Good User

-Band 7: Good User

-Band 6: Competent User

-Band 5: Modest User

-Band 4: Limited User

-Band 3: Extremely Limited User

-Band 2: Intermittent User

-Band 1: Non User
